Car registration renewal in Bahrain: renew online via bahrain.bh, eTraffic or MyGov once insurance, inspection and fines are in order. Here is how.
Car registration renewal in Bahrain is a yearly obligation for every vehicle owner, and for most private cars it now takes a few minutes online — through the bahrain.bh National Portal, the eTraffic app or the MyGov app. The system will only let you renew when three things are in order: civil liability insurance that covers the new registration year, a passed technical inspection if your vehicle needs one, and no unpaid traffic contraventions. Below: who must renew and when, what to prepare, each channel step by step, the official fees, and what happens if you let the registration lapse.
Who needs to renew, and when
A Bahraini vehicle registration certificate is valid for one year. Renewal is handled by the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT) at the Ministry of Interior and covers all vehicle types — private cars, motorcycles, commercial and heavy vehicles — except public transport vehicles, which follow a separate process. The registered owner is responsible for renewing: an individual using their personal number (CPR), or a company using its commercial registration (CR).
Renew on or before the expiry date shown on your registration. A late fee starts from the day after expiry, and an expired registration also causes problems if you want to sell: the official conditions for ownership transfer require the registration to be valid. If a sale is coming up, read our step-by-step guide to transferring car ownership in Bahrain so the renewal and the transfer happen in the right order.
Car registration renewal in Bahrain: what you need before you start
- Civil liability insurance (third-party at minimum) that covers the full validity period of the new registration. Renew or buy the policy first; if the policy ends before the new registration year does, the system will not accept it.
- A passed technical inspection, if required. Newer private cars are exempt from inspection for their first years; older private cars, and vehicle categories such as commercial vehicles, must pass inspection before renewal. The eService checks this automatically and tells you if inspection is needed.
- Settled traffic contraventions. The renewal flow shows any outstanding contraventions on the vehicle and asks you to pay them before the registration fee.
- An eKey (Bahrain's national digital identity login) for the online channels, or your CPR/CR and vehicle number for a kiosk.
- A debit or credit card for payment.
How to renew online: bahrain.bh, eTraffic or MyGov
The steps are the same on the website and the two apps, according to the official Renewal of Registration Certificate service page on bahrain.bh:
- Open the eGovernment website, the eTraffic app or the MyGov app and choose General Directorate of Traffic services, then Vehicle Registration Renewal.
- Log in with your eKey or the authentication factors the app asks for.
- Enter the vehicle number and select the registration type (private, commercial and so on).
- Let the system verify that all conditions are met — insurance validity and, where required, inspection.
- Pay any traffic contraventions shown on the vehicle.
- Pay the registration fee by debit or credit card. The service is processed immediately.
Save or screenshot the payment receipt. If the system refuses to proceed, the message usually tells you which condition is missing — most often insurance dates or a pending inspection.
Renewing at an iGA kiosk
If you do not use an eKey, the government self-service kiosks run the same service: choose General Directorate of Traffic services, then Vehicle Registration Renewal, enter the owner's ID or CR number, the vehicle number and registration type, confirm the conditions, pay any fines, then pay the fee.
When you need an inspection centre or a GDT branch
If your car needs a technical inspection, book and pass it before you try to renew. You can use the GDT's own inspection or an authorised external technical inspection centre; the official fee is 5 BHD for internal inspection and 15 BHD for external inspection. Our car inspection checklist for Bahrain lists what inspectors look at so you do not fail on something simple like a worn tyre or a warning light. For problems the eService cannot solve — for example a restriction on the vehicle — visit a GDT service centre; appointments are booked through the Mawaeid app.
Registration renewal fees in Bahrain
According to the bahrain.bh service page at the time of review, the annual fee depends on the vehicle category and weight:
- Motorcycles: 10 BHD
- Vehicles under 2.5 tonnes (most private cars and SUVs): 15 BHD
- 2.5 to 5 tonnes: 30 BHD
- 5 to 7 tonnes: 36 BHD
- 7 to 11 tonnes: 60 BHD
- Over 11 tonnes: 65 BHD
Add the inspection fee if your car needs one, plus any outstanding contraventions. Bahraini citizens over 60 can get a 50% discount on the renewal fee for one vehicle by using the Vehicle Registration Renewal Fee Discount eService before renewing. What happens if your registration expires
The official late fee is 500 fils for each day after the expiry date, capped at 20 BHD per year. The money is the smaller problem. With an expired registration you cannot transfer ownership, you may run into difficulty with your insurer after an accident, and driving an unregistered vehicle is itself a traffic offence that can be recorded against you. If a car will be off the road for a long period, ask the GDT about the Cancellation of Vehicle Registration Certificate service rather than letting arrears build up; it requires returning the plates and clearing any fines.
Common mistakes that block renewal
- Insurance that ends too early. The policy must cover the whole new registration year, not just the day you renew.
- Forgetting fines incurred by someone else. Contraventions recorded against the vehicle appear at renewal even if a family member or employee was driving.
- Choosing the wrong registration type when entering the vehicle number, which returns no record.
- Leaving inspection to the last day. Older cars that fail need repairs and a re-test, and the late fee keeps running.
- An expired or locked eKey. Check your login before the deadline week.
Selling soon? Renew first

Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my car registration with unpaid traffic fines?
The renewal flow shows outstanding contraventions on the vehicle and asks you to pay them before the registration fee, so in practice you settle them in the same session on bahrain.bh, eTraffic, MyGov or a kiosk.
Does my car need a technical inspection to renew?
Only if it is required for your vehicle. Newer private cars are exempt for their first years; older cars and some categories such as commercial vehicles must pass inspection first. The eService tells you when an inspection is needed.
How much is the late fee for an expired registration?
According to the official service page, 500 fils per day from the day after expiry, up to a maximum of 20 BHD per year.
Is there a discount for senior citizens?
Yes. Bahraini citizens over 60 can receive 50% off the annual renewal fee for one vehicle through the Vehicle Registration Renewal Fee Discount eService.
