Kia Shuma review: a 20-plus-year-old economy sedan you buy only as disposable transport

2.3/5

MotorsSouq Editorial Team

Only consider a Shuma at a genuinely token price, bought as a short-term, disposable runabout with no expectations of comfort, safety equipment or resale. It is a simple economy car well past any reasonable service life, and every alternative from the last ten years — including Kia's own current Pegas or Rio — is a better use of the same money.

Pros

  • Simple mechanicals that are cheap to service if you can find the parts
  • About as cheap as a running car gets in Bahrain

Cons

  • No meaningful safety equipment by current standards
  • Kia's Bahrain parts network does not realistically support this model any more
  • Well past any reasonable service life
  • Essentially zero resale value

The Shuma predates every modern expectation Bahraini buyers now have of a Kia: no reversing camera, no stability control, no airbags on most examples, and a 1.5-litre four that was modest even by 2001 standards. It shared its underpinnings with the Mazda 323 of the same era, which at least meant the mechanical basics were sound and simple to service when the car was new.

Why it still exists on Bahrain's roads

A car this old and this basic survives in a market for exactly one reason: price. What remains on the road here are examples that have been kept running cheaply for years by owners who need transport and cannot justify anything newer, not cars anyone has restored or cared for as a project.

Parts support through Kia's current Bahrain network is effectively nonexistent for a car this old; anything beyond routine consumables means scouring second-hand yards or importing used parts. Safety equipment by any current standard is absent, which matters more on Bahrain's faster roads than it did when the car was new.

There is no scenario in which a Shuma is the smart purchase over a ten-year-old Rio or Picanto at similar money. It belongs strictly in the 'better than walking' category.
