Mercedes-Benz CLK (W209) review: a cheap, handsome coupe with an expensive way of aging

3.2/5

MotorsSouq Editorial Team

Buy a CLK 350 today for the shape and the badge, not as a rational used-car decision. The V6 is smooth and the interior still feels special, but the W209 is out of warranty by well over a decade and Bahrain's independent Mercedes specialists, not the dealer network, are where these cars actually get kept alive. Inspect the air suspension (if fitted), the wiring harness under the dash, and service history before anything else — a cheap CLK with no paperwork is a car buying you a problem, not the other way around.

Pros

  • Classic long-bonnet coupe proportions still look right today
  • 3.5L V6 is smooth and the 7G-Tronic shifts cleanly
  • Rear-wheel-drive chassis is more engaging than period rivals
  • Very affordable purchase price on the Bahrain used market

Cons

  • Air suspension faults on Avantgarde-trim cars are common and costly
  • Dashboard wiring harness degrades with age and heat
  • No modern driver-assist safety systems whatsoever
  • Cheap examples with no service history are a real gamble

The W209 CLK sold on proportion more than anything else: a long bonnet, a low roofline and none of the visual bulk that later crept into Mercedes coupes. Two decades on in Bahrain, it is one of the cheapest ways to own that shape, with CLK 350 examples regularly changing hands for a fraction of their original price.

The 3.5-litre V6 is the pick of the range for daily use. It is smooth, revs cleanly to the redline and the 7G-Tronic gearbox shifts with none of the harshness that makes some older automatics feel their age. The CLK 500's V8 is quicker and sounds better, but parts and running costs step up a full class.

Living with one in Bahrain

This is not a car to buy on looks alone. The W209 generation is known for air suspension faults on Avantgarde-trim cars, wiring harness degradation under the dashboard, and interior trim that has not always survived twenty summers of Bahraini heat with its dignity intact. None of these are exotic problems, but all of them are expensive to have done properly, and Bahrain's Mercedes-specialist workshops — not the main dealer, which has moved on to warranty work on newer cars — are where you want this car serviced.

On the road it still does the job well: quiet at highway speed, comfortable over the causeway, and the rear-wheel-drive chassis is more engaging than anything front-wheel-drive from the same era. Just do not expect any of the modern safety systems buyers now take for granted — this is a pre-electronic-assist car in every sense.

The verdict on buying used

A CLK bought cheap and unchecked is the classic false economy. A CLK bought with full service history, a recent air suspension inspection (or one already converted to coil springs, which many owners do) and a pre-purchase inspection from an independent specialist is a genuinely charming, characterful coupe for not very much money. The gap between those two purchases is the whole story of owning this car in Bahrain.
