MINI Countryman (F60) review: the Mini that actually fits Bahrain family life

3.7/5

motorssouq Editorial Team

Buy the Countryman if you want the MINI badge and interior character without the practicality compromises of the hatch. The Cooper S is quick enough to be interesting and the ALL4 option is worth having if you cross the causeway in bad weather, though most Bahrain buyers will be perfectly served by the front-wheel-drive version. Treat it like any BMW-platform car on the service side: find a good independent specialist once the warranty runs out, and budget accordingly.

Pros

  • Real back seat and boot make it a genuinely usable MINI
  • Taller ride height copes with Bahrain's speed bumps and steep car park ramps better than the Cooper hatch
  • Cooper S's 2.0-litre turbo four gives credible pace for a family-sized car
  • ALL4 all-wheel drive is available for those who regularly cross the border

Cons

  • Same single-dealer, expensive-parts trade-offs as every MINI in Bahrain
  • Heavier and less sharp to steer than the Cooper hatch
  • B48 engine maintenance costs after the warranty ends need budgeting for
  • ALL4 adds price and consumption for little benefit in most day-to-day Bahrain driving

The F60 Countryman gave MINI its first genuine crossover in 2017 — four doors, a back seat that fits adults, and a 450-litre boot that expands to roughly 1,390 litres with the rear seats folded. It shares its platform with the contemporary BMW X1, which gives it a structural solidity no earlier Countryman had.

Driving it in Bahrain

Some of MINI's steering feel survives the size increase, though it is noticeably less sharp than the Cooper hatch. The taller ride height is the real payoff locally: it shrugs off Bahrain's aggressive speed bumps and steep car park ramps that a low Cooper scrapes on. The cabin is genuinely more livable in summer, with a stronger air conditioning system and more breathing room around rear passengers.

The Cooper S's 2.0-litre turbo four gives it credible pace for a family-sized car, and the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic shifts smoothly in daily use. Optional ALL4 all-wheel drive adds confidence for the rare rain shower or a cross-border trip, but it is not something most Bahrain owners will actually need day to day.

Ownership reality

The same MINI ownership trade-offs apply here: a single Bahrain dealer, BMW-catalogue parts pricing, and a B48 engine shared with the Cooper S hatch that carries similar maintenance risks as it ages. What the Countryman buys you is genuine usability — a MINI you can actually use as a family's only car without apologising for the back seat or the boot.

Buy the Countryman over the hatch if a back seat or a boot are non-negotiable, and buy the Cooper S over the base Cooper if you want the badge to still feel a little sporty once the practicality box is ticked. Front-wheel drive is the right call for the vast majority of Bahrain driving; save ALL4 for the rare buyer who genuinely needs it.
