Proton Persona Elegance review: a smoothed-over budget sedan still stranded without support in Bahrain

The Persona Elegance is the more finished version of Proton's compact-sedan formula — a smoother engine, a calmer ride, and enough boot space to be a genuinely usable family car when it was new. None of that changes the practical reality in Bahrain: Proton never had a real dealer network here, this generation is now well over a decade old, and resale or parts support essentially does not exist. Consider one only as a cheap, mechanically sound daily runabout bought with eyes open, never as an investment or a car to lean on for trouble-free ownership.

By 2010 Proton knew the CamPro engine's early reputation for a rough idle and coarse note under load needed fixing, and the Elegance facelift's new 32-bit Continental VDO ECU was the answer — throttle response and idle smoothness genuinely improved over the pre-facelift Persona, even if the engine was never going to be mistaken for a Japanese four for outright refinement.
The sedan body brings a proper boot rather than the Gen•2's hatch, and rear seat space is generous for the car's footprint — a consequence of the Gen•2 platform being stretched for a three-box body rather than shrunk for one. Three trim lines were offered — Base Line, Medium Line and High Line — with the range-topping High Line available only with the four-speed automatic, which most Bahraini buyers would have chosen anyway for the stop-start driving common in Manama traffic.
The Bahrain reality check
None of that engineering progress changes the commercial reality: Proton's presence in the Gulf has always run through small independent importers rather than a proper franchised dealer network, and that was already thinning out by the time this facelift launched. A Persona Elegance bought used in Bahrain today is, mechanically, a reasonably sorted small sedan; commercially, it is an orphan with no factory-backed parts supply, no manufacturer warranty of any kind remaining, and negligible resale value.
Living with one
Ride comfort on Bahrain's better-maintained roads is genuinely decent for the class, and the automatic gearbox suits the country's traffic patterns well. Air conditioning performance in a car pushing fifteen years old needs careful pre-purchase checking, as does the condition of interior trim, which was never particularly durable even when new.
Who it suits
Someone who wants the cheapest possible route to a reasonably comfortable automatic sedan, is not counting on resale value, and has already found a workshop willing to service a CamPro engine. Anyone who needs dependable parts availability or any form of manufacturer backing should buy a same-era Nissan Sunny or Hyundai Accent instead.
