Volkswagen Passat (NMS) review: a discontinued sedan that still makes used-market sense

3.6/5

motorssouq Editorial Team

The NMS Passat is a value play, not an aspirational one: buy it because a same-age Camry or Accord costs more for a similar-size cabin, not because you are chasing a German badge. The 1.8 TSI and six-speed automatic are a mechanically simple pairing that has proven itself over a decade of use, but confirm timing-chain tensioner service history before buying, and expect a smaller resale pool than a Japanese equivalent when you eventually sell.

Pros

  • Rear-seat legroom and 452-litre boot rival cars a class above
  • 1.8 TSI with conventional 6-speed automatic avoids DSG reliability concerns
  • Priced well below a same-age Camry or Accord on the used market
  • Simple, well-understood mechanical layout for a Volkswagen

Cons

  • No longer sold new in Bahrain — every example is used, with no factory warranty
  • Smaller resale pool than a Japanese equivalent
  • Timing-chain tensioner service history must be verified before buying
  • Parts availability is workable but thinner than for a current Toyota

Volkswagen's decision to build a second, cheaper Passat specifically for North America and export markets like the Gulf never got much attention outside enthusiast circles, but it produced exactly the car most Bahraini Passat buyers actually wanted: bigger inside than the European B8, simpler underneath, and priced against a Camry rather than a 3 Series.

The 1.8-litre turbo four is the engine to look for. It replaced a five-cylinder in the earlier NMS cars and pairs with a conventional six-speed automatic rather than a dual-clutch gearbox, which means the failure modes that worry buyers of European-spec DSG Volkswagens simply do not apply here. It is not quick — 170 hp moves 1.5 tonnes without urgency — but it is smooth and unstressed in daily Manama traffic.

Space over sport

The wheelbase is nearly 2.8 metres, and it shows: rear-seat legroom on this Passat embarrasses cars a class above, and the 452-litre boot swallows a family's causeway luggage without folding a seat. This is a car bought for the back seat and the boot, not the front seats or the steering feel, and it delivers exactly that trade convincingly.

The used-market reality

Because Volkswagen stopped selling the model new in the Gulf, every Passat on the Bahraini market today is a used import or a dealer trade-in, and the factory warranty has long since expired on all of them. That makes pre-purchase inspection non-negotiable — check for a documented timing-chain tensioner service (a known NMS-era weak point on high-mileage examples) and confirm the six-speed automatic has had its fluid changed on schedule rather than "sealed for life" neglect.

Parts availability is workable but thinner than for a current-model Toyota: expect to order some components through a VW specialist rather than picking them up off the shelf, and budget accordingly on time as much as cost.
