The S40 is worth considering only as a very cheap, very short-term used buy from a private seller who can show real service history, never as a car to keep past its next major service. The 2.4-litre five-cylinder is a genuinely characterful engine and the Volvo safety cell is real, but Ford-era electrical faults, thin parts stock in Bahrain and a used-market floor price that reflects all of it mean this is a car for someone who enjoys a project, not someone who wants an appliance.

What still works
The naturally aspirated 2.4-litre inline-five is the pick of the engines sold here: smooth, torquey low down, and genuinely characterful next to the four-cylinder units in every rival of the era. The safety cell that gave Volvo its reputation is present and correct, and the S40 was a five-star Euro NCAP performer when new, which is more than can be said for some rivals from the same period.
What to check before buying
This is a Ford-era Volvo, and it carries a Ford-era electrical reputation: window regulators, central locking modules and interior trim rattles are the common complaints from Bahraini owners, and none of them are helped by fifteen-plus years of 45°C summers baking the dashboard plastics. Parts availability through Volvo's local dealer is thin for a car this old, and independent workshops that genuinely know the platform are fewer than for a contemporary Corolla or Civic.
Buy only with a full, checkable service history, budget for an independent pre-purchase inspection focused on the electrics and suspension bushings, and treat the purchase price as most of what you will spend — this is not a car to sink further money into once problems appear.
