Car Accident in Bahrain: What to Do, How to Report It and Claim Insurance

Editorial Team October 10, 2026 6 min read

What to do after a car accident in Bahrain: when to call 199 or 999, how to file a damage-only report in the Traffic app, and what your insurer needs.

A car accident in Bahrain is stressful, but the process for reporting it is more straightforward than most drivers expect. For accidents with vehicle damage only and no injuries, the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT) offers an online report through the Traffic (eTraffic) app, and insurance companies handle the settlement. When someone is hurt, the rules are different and you need to involve the traffic authorities. This guide walks through the first minutes, the official reporting steps, what to give your insurer and the common mistakes that delay a claim.

First, make everyone safe

Before anything else, check whether anyone is hurt. If there are injuries, call the emergency number 999 for urgent medical help. The official damage-only reporting service also directs you to the Traffic Inquiry Center on 199 if anyone was injured, and it ends there: injury accidents are not handled through the online damage-only report. If nobody is hurt, switch on your hazard lights, put on a high-visibility vest if you have one and move to a safe spot if the cars are drivable and blocking the road. Do not stand between lanes on a busy highway.

Document the scene before anything moves

Whatever the cause, protect yourself with evidence. Take photos with your phone:

  • All vehicles from several angles, showing the damage and the position on the road.
  • The number plates of every vehicle, clearly readable. The official reporting service asks you to attach photos and to make sure plate details are correct and visible.
  • Skid marks, road signs, traffic lights and the lane markings.
  • The other driver's licence, vehicle registration and insurance details, including the insurer's name.

Write down the time, the exact location and the names and phone numbers of any witnesses. Stay calm, do not argue about blame at the scene and do not sign anything you do not understand.

Reporting a damage-only accident in the Traffic app

The bahrain.bh service page for reporting settled traffic accidents describes the process. It is for accidents involving vehicle damage only, and the listed condition is valid civil liability insurance covering the registration period. The steps in the app are:

  1. Open the Traffic app and choose Traffic Accident Services, then the Traffic Accident Reporting Service.
  2. Answer whether anyone was injured. If yes, the service directs you to call the Traffic Inquiry Center (199) and ends. If no, you continue.
  3. Choose who is reporting: the affected driver or the at-fault driver. The at-fault driver must complete an acknowledgement at the end of the process.
  4. Enter the required details and attach the accident photos, checking that plate details are correct.
  5. Submit. The report is registered and its number is sent to all parties.

The page lists a processing time of one working day. Related services in the same app let you view a reported accident, find insurance company locations and complete the acknowledgement by logging in with your eKey and selecting the report. The service is based on Ministry of Interior Decision No. (7) of 2021, which assigned the settlement of reconciled damage-only accidents to the insurers' representatives.

What happens next with the insurers

When the Bahrain Insurance Association announced the scheme in 2021, it said that after the report the parties go to the insurance company of the at-fault driver, within 48 hours. Rules and timing may have changed since, so treat that deadline as a prompt to act quickly and confirm it with your insurer. Your insurer will normally ask for:

  • The report number from the app or the insurance electronic form.
  • The photos you took and the plate numbers of all vehicles.
  • Your licence, ID, registration card and policy number.
  • A repair estimate from the workshop your insurer approves, if the damage is yours to claim.

What you can claim depends on your policy. Third-party cover generally pays for damage to the other party; comprehensive cover is what pays to repair your own car. Our guide to third-party vs comprehensive car insurance in Bahrain explains the difference, and it is worth reading before you renew.

If the other driver does not agree or leaves

The online damage-only route is built for accidents where the parties cooperate. If the other driver disputes the facts, refuses to cooperate, drives off or there are injuries, do not try to settle it yourself. Call 199 for the traffic authorities, stay at a safe distance and give them your photos and witness details. If the other vehicle fled, note the plate number, colour, make and direction and report that.

Repairs, valuation and total-loss situations

Ask your insurer which workshops and agencies it approves before you start repairs. Keep every invoice and the photos of the damaged car; they help with the claim and with resale later. If the repair costs approach the car's value, ask your insurer how it assesses a total loss, and compare the car's worth using our car valuation tool. An accident on record can affect resale, so buyers look for repair quality and paperwork. If you are thinking of selling, read how to sell your car fast in Bahrain.

For used car buyers: why accident history matters

If you are buying rather than driving, the same accident culture applies. A car may have been repaired after a crash and sold without telling you. Use the official check in our guide to the vehicle record check in Bahrain and browse accident-free cars in Bahrain, then inspect the car yourself using our car inspection checklist.

Mistakes that slow down a claim

  • Moving the cars without taking photos first.
  • Photos where the plates are not readable.
  • Admitting fault in writing, or the opposite, refusing the acknowledgement when you are at fault.
  • Letting your insurance or registration lapse. A valid civil liability policy is a condition of the reporting service, and our guide to car registration renewal shows how to stay current.
  • Starting repairs before your insurer agrees.
