Electric and Hybrid Cars: An Emerging Trend or a Permanent Shift in the UAE Auto Market?

ِAlbilad news September 17, 2026 10 min read

Electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs and HEVs) have long been considered an emerging alternative to traditional fuel-powered cars. However, with the growing range of models available in the UAE market and the expansion of charging infrastructure, a new question arises: Are electric and hybrid cars merely a temporary trend, or have they become a permanent feature of consumer choices when searching for cars in the UAE?

Data tracking user activity on the dubizzle platform during August suggests that the second scenario may be closer to reality, with a select group of hybrid and electric models recording a noticeable increase in ad views compared to the previous period.

This interest is not concentrated in a single brand or category. Toyota has maintained a strong presence within the hybrid segment, while Tesla and BYD, alongside a number of premium European brands, continued to draw growing interest in the electric vehicle category.

  • *Hybrid Cars: Familiar Brands and Growing Interest**

Toyota captured the top five spots among hybrid models recording the highest increase in ad views during the period, indicating that hybrid technology is becoming a more established choice for consumers seeking greater fuel efficiency without giving up the familiar and practical.

The following models recorded significant growth:

  • **Toyota Camry:** Over 102,000 views, an increase of 25%
  • **Toyota Corolla Cross:** Over 81,000 views, an increase of 20%
  • **Toyota Corolla:** Over 53,000 views, an increase of 35%
  • **Toyota Highlander:** Over 51,000 views, an increase of 21%
  • **Toyota Crown:** Over 29,000 views, an increase of 54%

The diversity of popular models—ranging from sedans to SUVs and luxury cars—indicates that interest in hybrids is no longer limited to a specific group of sustainability-conscious buyers. Instead, these vehicles have become part of standard side-by-side comparisons with conventional cars, factoring in fuel efficiency, cost, and practicality.

  • *Electric Vehicles: A More Diverse Range of Options**

The EV sector is also experiencing a broadening of consumer options. The Tesla Model Y recorded the highest number of ad views among the electric models included in the analysis, exceeding 88,000 views, while other models from Tesla, BYD, and Audi saw increased engagement.

Models such as the Audi RS e-tron GT, BYD Seal, BYD Atto 3, and Tesla Model X sequentially saw a surge in platform engagement. This reflects the diverse consumer interest in EVs across various categories—from high-performance cars and family SUVs to mass-market offerings.

This variety indicates that buyer interest in EVs is no longer tied to a handful of models, especially as more brands and options enter the UAE market.

  • *From Emerging Trend to a Core Component of the UAE Auto Market**

These shifts come at a time when the UAE is witnessing growth in EV adoption and the expansion of the necessary supporting infrastructure.

The number of electric vehicles in Dubai rose to 47,944 by the end of 2025, compared to 37,486 in 2024—a growth rate of nearly 28%. Furthermore, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's (DEWA) Green Charger network reached 2,223 charging points by the first quarter of 2026.

This infrastructure expansion supports EV adoption by addressing one of the key practical factors influencing consumer decisions when switching to electric. Meanwhile, hybrid vehicles offer a middle ground for consumers who want to improve fuel efficiency while relying on gasoline engines.

Shareef Magdy, Director of Sales at dubizzle Cars, stated: "The UAE auto market is undergoing a rapid transformation—not only through the growing presence of electric and hybrid cars and the wider array of options available to consumers, but also in how buyers perceive these categories. Instead of treating EVs and hybrids as niche alternatives separate from conventional cars, they are increasingly integrated into the same comparisons and considerations when searching for a new or used vehicle."

He added: "The latest activity data on dubizzle reflects this trend. Today's consumers are exploring a broader range of options, from mainstream hybrid sedans and SUVs to specialized EV brands and high-performance electric models. This highlights the transition of EVs and hybrids from emerging choices to a growing fixture in mainstream car-buying discussions, though the final decision remains tied to each consumer's individual needs, lifestyle, budget, priorities, and driving preferences."

  • *A New Question for Car Buyers in the UAE**

The data suggests that the discussion is no longer limited to the question: *"Should I buy an electric or a fuel-powered car?"*

As choices expand, the conversation surrounding electric and hybrid vehicles in the UAE is gradually evolving. Rather than simply asking whether traditional cars can be replaced by EVs, consumers now face a wider spectrum of choices differing in powertrains, pricing, usage, and running costs.

Some drivers may find that hybrids offer the ideal balance between fuel efficiency and convenience, while EVs may be a better fit for others as the charging network continues to grow and model variety expands.

Dubizzle's data indicates that the question is no longer *if* electric and hybrid vehicles will establish a foothold in the UAE car market, but rather *how far* their market share and role will expand in shaping the future of mobility in the country.
