Bahrain's EV adoption curve has steepened dramatically since the EWA charging-tariff reform in late 2025. Here is what you need to know if you are shopping for an electric car as your daily driver.
The public charging network
As of April 2026 the Kingdom hosts 142 public charge points across 38 locations. Roughly two-thirds are AC type-2 (slow, 7 kW); the remainder are DC fast chargers (50 kW+). The densest coverage is along Sheikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway and around Bahrain Bay.
Home-charging installation
EWA's residential EV tariff is 17 fils per kWh — about a third of petrol on a per-kilometre basis. A 7 kW wallbox installed in a typical Bahrain villa runs 380-650 BHD all-in including the consent paperwork.
Which models work for Bahrain summers?
Heat is the EV battery's enemy. Models with active liquid cooling (Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Porsche Taycan) hold up to 45°C ambient temperatures without throttling. Air-cooled packs (early Nissan Leaf, BYD models pre-2024) lose 8-12% range in summer driving.
Range anxiety in a 30-km wide country
Bahrain is small. Even a 60% real-world charge gets you across the kingdom and back. The argument against EVs in Bahrain is essentially gone unless you regularly drive into Saudi Arabia — in which case you'll want to map the Saudi charger network before committing.
Resale value
EV resale in Bahrain has been weak historically because the buyer pool was tiny. With charging penetration where it is now, that gap is closing — recent listings on motorssouq.com show 18-month-old EVs holding 78-82% of their original value, comparable to petrol equivalents.
