Lost or damaged your car ownership certificate in Bahrain? See the official online replacement service, conditions, the 10 BHD fee, timings and delivery.
If you have lost or damaged your car ownership certificate in Bahrain, you do not need to panic and you usually do not need to queue. The General Directorate of Traffic (GDT) offers an online service to issue a replacement for a lost or damaged inspection and ownership certificate. This guide explains what the document is, why you need it when you sell or export a car, the conditions the vehicle must meet, the steps, the official 10 BHD fee and the timings for printing and delivery, plus how to avoid losing it again.
What the ownership certificate is and why it matters
The official name on bahrain.bh is the inspection and ownership certificate. It records the vehicle and its registered owner and is issued with the vehicle's inspection. Many people simply call it the car papers. It matters most in three situations:
- Selling the car. The ownership transfer service lists the vehicle ownership certificate among the required documents, together with valid ID for both parties and the signed licensing form. See our guide to transferring car ownership in Bahrain.
- Exporting the car. The final export service also lists the ownership certificate among the required documents.
- Proving who owns the car when a buyer, a workshop or an insurer asks to see it.
Buyers should insist on the original certificate. If a seller says it is lost, the right answer is not to skip it but to ask the seller to request a replacement first, as described below. Our guide to buying a used car by owner explains how to handle that conversation.
Conditions for a replacement
According to the bahrain.bh service page for issuing a replacement of a lost or damaged inspection and ownership certificate, the vehicle must meet these conditions:
- The vehicle registration must be valid. If it has expired, renew it first; see our guide to car registration renewal in Bahrain.
- All fines, contraventions and accidents must be cleared, if there are any. Check them as explained in our traffic fines guide.
- There must be no legal restrictions on the vehicle, such as seizure or loans.
- The applicable fees must be paid.
The last two conditions matter if your car is financed. A vehicle with a loan is treated as having a restriction, so you may need to deal with your lender before the service lets you proceed. Ask your lender how the certificate is handled during the loan, since the official page does not describe that case.
How to apply: step by step
- Open the online eService on the government services site, listed as an eService to issue a lost or damaged vehicle ownership certificate, and sign in with an authentication method such as your eKey.
- Enter the vehicle number and select the registration type.
- Enter the delivery address and your contact details.
- Let the system check the conditions above.
- Pay the fee.
The page lists payment by debit card or credit card. Keep the payment confirmation until the certificate arrives.
Fees and timings
- Fee: 10 BHD for issuing the replacement certificate. For comparison, the page for the original inspection and ownership certificate fee lists 6 BHD.
- Electronic request: immediate.
- Printing at the GDT: one working day.
- Delivery by Bahrain Post: up to five working days.
So allow roughly a week from payment to a certificate in your hands, longer around holidays. If you need the car papers urgently for a sale or transfer appointment, start the replacement before you book the appointment and do not promise the buyer a handover date until the certificate arrives. If you want help chasing government paperwork, our government clearance service can handle it for you.
What a buyer should ask when the certificate is "lost"
Not every seller who says the certificate is lost is hiding something; papers do get lost. But a careful buyer does not pay a large deposit or take the car before seeing the replacement certificate and matching the chassis number and owner name against the seller's ID. Ask the seller to start the replacement in front of you or to show the payment confirmation, and agree in writing that the sale is conditional on the replacement arriving.
If the replacement is refused
The most common reasons are the ones on the conditions list: an unpaid fine, an expired registration or a restriction such as a loan or seizure on the vehicle. Clear the issue first, then reapply. If the system shows a problem you do not understand, a visit to a GDT service centre may be needed; appointments for the GDT's in-person services are booked through the Mawaeid app. The official pages we reviewed do not describe a separate procedure for stolen documents, so if you suspect theft of the papers together with other documents, contact the authorities and your insurer and keep your ID safe.
Selling a car while the certificate is missing
You can still advertise the car and talk to buyers, but be upfront. Tell serious buyers that the replacement is in progress and give the date you expect it. Do not accept a deposit as if the paperwork were ready. List your car through sell your car once your documents are in order, and check the car's official record yourself first, as explained in our vehicle record check guide.
How to avoid losing it again
- Do not keep the original in the car. Keep it with your ID and passport at home.
- Photograph both sides and store the photos securely. A photo is not a replacement but helps you quote the details quickly.
- Keep the registration card and insurance documents in the car, and the original certificate somewhere safe.
- Set a reminder for the registration and insurance expiry dates so a renewal does not catch you without papers.
