Audi TT (8S) review: the last small Audi sports car, now a used-only buy

The 8S TT is a genuinely good small sports car that arrived at the wrong moment for Audi's SUV-first Gulf strategy, which means it never sold in volume here and now exists only as a used buy. That works in a shopper's favour: quattro grip, a dual-clutch box that suits Bahrain traffic, and depreciation that has already done most of its damage. Skip the entry front-wheel-drive cars if you can find quattro, and budget for the DSG mechatronic unit as the one component worth a pre-purchase inspection.

The third TT closed out an 18-year run for the nameplate in 2023, and Audi has not confirmed a replacement — the badge may simply be retired as the brand leans further into SUVs and electric models. For a Bahrain buyer today, that makes the 8S entirely a used-car proposition, and a fairly rewarding one.
The 2.0-litre turbo four making around 230 hp in quattro form is shared hardware with the Volkswagen Group's wider hot-hatch family, and it feels it — strong mid-range pull, a dual-clutch gearbox that shifts crisply, and a driving position low enough that the TT feels smaller and quicker than its on-paper numbers suggest.
What the small footprint costs you
The back seat is a 2+2 arrangement in name only; two adults will not want to sit there for a causeway run, and the boot at 305 litres is coupe-typical rather than generous. This is a second or third car in a Bahrain household, not the only one.
Cabin quality holds up well against newer, more expensive Audis — the virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster was ahead of its rivals when the car launched and still looks contemporary today, which is not something you can say about every 2014-vintage interior.
Buying used in Bahrain
Front-wheel-drive TTs were sold alongside quattro versions in some model years; the quattro is the one worth seeking out for Gulf conditions and for resale. The S tronic dual-clutch's mechatronic unit is the single component most worth a pre-purchase inspection, since a rebuild is a specialist job and not a cheap one. Otherwise the TT is a mechanically simple, well-screwed-together small coupe that has already absorbed the worst of its depreciation.
