The 320i E90 LCI is the safest used-3-Series pick for most Bahrain buyers: newer than the E46, cheaper than the F30, five-star crash safety, and a dealer network that still stocks parts for it. The N43's known weak point is oil consumption from worn valve stem seals on higher-mileage cars, so ask for a compression or leak-down check rather than trusting the odometer alone. Buy the manual if you can find one in good condition, it is rarer than the automatic and holds its value better as a result.

When the E90 replaced the E46, BMW made the deliberate choice to drop the entry-level inline-six in favour of a more modern, Valvetronic four-cylinder for the 320i, and the facelifted LCI version with the N43 engine is the version most commonly found on Bahrain's used market today. 170 hp in a bigger, stiffer body than the E46's is not dramatically quicker on paper, but the improvement in refinement, safety equipment and interior quality is obvious the moment you sit in one.
Why it dominates Bahrain's used listings
The E90 sits in a sweet spot locally: old enough to be genuinely affordable, new enough to still get full parts support from the official BMW dealer network as well as independent specialists, and common enough that almost every workshop on the island has seen dozens of them. That combination is rare for a European sedan this age and is the main reason it outnumbers both the E46 and the F30 on Bahrain's used-car sites.
The N43's main known issue is oil consumption from worn valve stem seals, which shows up as blue smoke on cold start-up or hard acceleration in higher-mileage examples, common enough by 150,000 km that a leak-down or compression test before buying is worth insisting on rather than trusting a clean-looking engine bay.
Run-flat tyres, standard on this generation, are convenient after a puncture but expensive to replace and ride firmer than a conventional tyre, worth knowing before you judge the ride quality on a test drive with worn originals.
