BMW 323i (E46) review: the cheapest way into a real BMW six, if you know what you're buying

3.2/5

motorssouq Editorial Team

Buy an E46 323i in Bahrain for the driving experience and the badge, not for peace of mind. The M52TU engine is sound and avoided the Nikasil problem of its predecessor, but a 25-plus-year-old car with this little production volume means parts are increasingly special-order, and independent BMW specialists are a better bet than dealer service. If you want the same era with meaningfully more power for similar money, look at the 328i first.

Pros

  • Alusil-block M52TU avoids the Nikasil bore-wear risk of older BMW sixes
  • E46 chassis balance is still a benchmark among enthusiasts
  • Cheapest realistic entry into a used BMW inline-six in Bahrain
  • Manual gearbox available, unlike some later trims

Cons

  • Only 170 hp, noticeably slower than the 328i sold alongside it
  • Two-year production run means some trim and suspension parts are special-order
  • 25-plus years of Gulf heat has taken a toll on cooling and interior plastics on unrestored cars
  • Low resale value means clean examples rarely trade for much less than problem cars

The 323i arrived with the E46 3 Series in April 1998 as the entry-level six, a 2.5-litre M52TU straight-six making 170 hp, and it was gone from BMW's range by September 2000, replaced by the 325i as part of a wider engine reshuffle. That short production window means it was never sold in huge numbers in the Gulf, and today it occupies an odd space in Bahrain's used market: too old to be a normal daily car, not yet rare enough to be a proper classic.

What it drives like

The E46 chassis is the reason people still seek this car out. Even in base-six form, the steering weight, the front-to-rear balance and the way the car settles into a corner are things a modern turbocharged rival cannot easily replicate. The 170 hp is modest by today's standards, and the automatic gearbox blunts it further, but a manual 323i on a quiet stretch of coastal road is still a genuinely enjoyable car to drive.

The M52TU engine used an Alusil cylinder block rather than the Nikasil-coated liners of the earlier M50 and M52 engines, which is the detail that actually matters for a Gulf buyer: it does not carry the bore-wear risk that high-sulfur regional fuel created for BMW sixes built before 1996-1998. That single fact makes the 323i a safer used buy than an equivalent-era 325i or 328i from the previous E36 generation.

Running one in Bahrain today

The real cost of ownership is not the engine, it is everything around it after a quarter-century in Gulf heat: cooling system plastics, rubber bushings, interior trim adhesives and electrical connectors are all candidates for replacement on any unrestored example. Budget for a full inspection by an independent BMW specialist before buying, not after, and expect to source some trim and suspension parts through UK or European specialists rather than the local dealer network.

Resale value is low in absolute terms, which cuts both ways: it is cheap to buy into, but a well-sorted example is genuinely hard to find and does not command much of a premium over a tired one. Buy on condition and service history, not on price alone.
