Chevrolet Spark review: the cheapest new-car ticket in Bahrain, with real trade-offs

2.9/5

MotorsSouq Editorial Team

The Spark makes sense for exactly one buyer: someone who needs a second or third household car for short city trips and cares more about the purchase price than anything else on this sheet. It is genuinely cheap to insure and run, and the 1.4-litre engine, while modest, is simple and reliable. It is not a highway car — the causeway to Saudi at 120 km/h is not where a Spark is happiest — and resale value trails every rival, including the segment's other budget options, because GM has stopped making it. Buy it new-old-stock at a real discount, or used at a price that assumes near-zero resale in three years.

Pros

  • Among the cheapest cars to buy and insure new in Bahrain
  • Tiny turning circle and footprint make city parking and narrow streets a non-issue
  • Naturally aspirated 1.4L avoids turbo maintenance concerns
  • Simple, inexpensive independent servicing

Cons

  • Underpowered and unsettled at causeway/highway speeds with a full load
  • Rear seat and boot are tight for a family of four
  • GM ended global production in 2022, hurting resale value further
  • Bahrain dealer support has thinned since the model's launch years

There is no pretending the Spark is anything other than what it is: the cheapest way into a showroom-new Chevrolet in the Gulf. The 1.4-litre four makes 98 hp, which sounds thin on paper and feels exactly that thin once you are carrying four adults and merging onto Sheikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway. Around Manama's back streets and roundabouts, though, the light body and tight turning circle make it genuinely pleasant — parking is a non-event, and the small footprint means Bahrain's older residential streets and tight garages are never a problem.

Cabin space is the honest trade-off. Front seats are fine for two adults; the rear bench is best treated as occasional or child-seat duty rather than a place for two more adults on a causeway run. Boot space is small enough that a full grocery run for a family of four fills it.

Running costs in Bahrain

This is where the Spark earns its keep. Insurance premiums are among the lowest of any new car sold here, fuel consumption is negligible against a household budget, and the naturally aspirated engine carries none of the turbo maintenance concerns that trouble small-displacement rivals. Servicing at an independent workshop is cheap and straightforward.

What you give up

Highway refinement, resale value, and options for a growing family are the three things you trade for the low sticker price. GM ended global Spark production in 2022, and Chevrolet's Bahrain presence has generally thinned since — so a used Spark bought today should be priced assuming it is close to a disposable asset, not an investment. Buyers cross-shopping should also weigh a used Kia Picanto or Hyundai i10, both of which hold value slightly better because their manufacturers kept building them.
