Ford Thunderbird (2002-2005) review: a beautiful, expensive-to-own collector's car in Bahrain

The revival Thunderbird was styled to sell and engineered to a budget, and both show: it is a genuinely striking car to own and a genuinely soft one to drive, with a Jaguar-derived V8 that needs specialist attention few workshops in Bahrain can give without ordering parts from abroad. Buy one purely as a collector piece for occasional weekend use, insist on full documentation of its import history, and do not expect to use it as a second car.

Ford brought the Thunderbird name back in 2002 as a pure styling exercise: a two-seat convertible with a removable hardtop, deliberately referencing the 1955 original, built on the same DEW98 platform underpinning the contemporary Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type. It sold well for two years on novelty alone, then fell away quickly once the styling stopped being new — which is roughly the arc every Thunderbird generation has followed since the 1960s.
The 3.9-litre DOHC V8 is the same family of engine used in period Jaguars, and it is the best part of the car: smooth, free-revving for an American V8 of its era, and genuinely characterful through a five-speed automatic. It never pretends to be a sports car engine, and it does not need to.
Driving it in Bahrain
The chassis underneath that engine was tuned for a comfortable, isolated American boulevard ride, not for back-road precision, and it shows the moment the road stops being straight. In Bahrain that is rarely a problem — most of the driving this car will do is a slow cruise along the Corniche with the top down — but it means the styling writes a cheque the driving experience does not cash.
The convertible top and an air-conditioning system designed for a temperate US market both work harder than they were built for across a Bahraini summer, and neither is a quick or cheap thing to have rebuilt locally if it fails.
Ownership reality
This is the real cost of owning one here. Few workshops in Bahrain see enough Jaguar-shared AJ35 V8s or DEW98-platform electronics to diagnose problems quickly, and parts commonly mean an order placed abroad and a wait measured in weeks, not days. Values are driven almost entirely by sentiment and rarity rather than by any functional market, which cuts both ways: cheap to buy, potentially expensive to keep running well.
Buy it if you already own a daily car and want a striking, low-mileage weekend piece with a story. Do not buy it expecting a usable second car, and do not buy one without a specialist pre-purchase inspection.
