Hyundai H-1 review: Bahrain's default big family and business van

3.6/5

motorssouq Editorial Team

The H-1 is not exciting to drive and was never meant to be — it is a tool, and a very good one, for anyone who genuinely needs to move nine or more people or a full load of cargo regularly. The 3.8-litre V6 petrol has enough reserve power fully loaded on the causeway to Saudi that it never feels stressed, and Hyundai's parts and service network in Bahrain is as deep for this van as for any Elantra. Buy the diesel if most of your driving is heavy and repetitive; buy the petrol if comfort for passengers matters more than fuel economy.

Pros

  • 9 to 12-seat configurations cover everything from a large family to a tour operator
  • Two decades of parts and service history make it one of the easiest big vehicles to maintain in Bahrain
  • 3.8-litre V6 petrol has real reserve power fully loaded on the causeway
  • Steady resale driven by constant commercial and family demand

Cons

  • Base single-zone air conditioning struggles to cool the rear rows in a Bahraini summer
  • Handles and rides more like a van than a modern people-mover
  • Base petrol grade limited to two airbags
  • Fuel economy is secondary to space in the V6 petrol version

The H-1 has been the answer to "how do I move a lot of people or a lot of cargo in Bahrain" for two decades, and Hyundai has kept it current with regular facelifts rather than letting it go stale. The current shape, on sale since 2018, brought sharper styling and a genuinely useful amount of extra cabin refinement over the van it replaced.

Bahraini buyers typically choose between the 3.8-litre V6 petrol, favoured by private passenger-van buyers for its smoothness and reserve of power, and a 2.5-litre CRDi diesel more common on commercial and taxi-plated examples for its lower running costs on high daily mileage. Both drive the front wheels through an automatic, and both are more composed at highway speed than the van's size suggests — the H-1 tracks straight and stable loaded on the causeway to Saudi, which matters when nine passengers and their luggage are on board.

Living with it day to day

Space is the entire point, and the H-1 delivers: nine to twelve seats depending on configuration, sliding doors on both sides for easy access at a school gate or airport kerb, and, in van-bodied form, a cargo hold that shames most pickups. Rear-seat air conditioning in higher grades is worth paying extra for — the base single-zone system works hard to cool twelve people through a Bahraini summer.

Reliability and parts availability are the strongest arguments for the H-1 over a newer, more car-like people-mover: every Hyundai dealer and a large share of independent workshops in Bahrain know this van inside out, and it has a two-decade track record here as a commercial workhorse. Resale is steady rather than spectacular, propped up by constant demand from tour operators and large families rather than any collector interest.
