Our Armada review

Nissan Armada review: the Patrol's American cousin, and the harder one to sell on

3.7/5

motorssouq Editorial Team

Mechanically the Armada is a Patrol in different clothes, and that is exactly the case for buying one: the same VK56 V8 and running gear at a used-market discount because the Bahraini badge preference favours the Patrol. Buy it if you want Patrol reliability and space without paying the Patrol premium, and accept upfront that you are trading resale strength for that discount.

Pros

  • Same VK56VD V8 and 7-speed drivetrain as the Patrol, at a lower used price
  • Identical service and parts network to a car Bahrain's workshops already know well
  • Roomy three-row cabin and genuine towing capability
  • Comparable condition Armadas typically undercut equivalent Patrols

Cons

  • Resale value trails the Patrol purely on badge preference
  • GCC power output (360 hp) is below both the Patrol and US-spec Armada
  • Longer time to sell than an equivalent Patrol when the time comes
  • Fuel consumption of 14-15 L/100 km is real V8 territory

Nissan built the Armada and the Patrol on the same Y62 architecture, sharing the VK56VD V8, most of the chassis and much of the interior architecture, but styled the Armada for a North American audience and the Patrol for everyone else. GCC-market Armadas exist as a lower-volume alternative sold alongside the Patrol, mechanically similar but detuned slightly below both the Patrol and the US-spec Armada at around 360 hp.

Driving and ownership

On the road, an Armada drives almost indistinguishably from a Patrol of the same era — the same relaxed V8 delivery, the same hydraulic body-motion control on higher grades, and the same 7-speed automatic. Fuel consumption sits in the same 14-15 L/100 km range that any full-size body-on-frame V8 SUV returns in Gulf conditions, and servicing at a Nissan-familiar workshop is identical between the two nameplates.

Where they diverge is brand perception. Bahraini buyers who want a big Nissan V8 SUV default to 'Patrol' as a category name the way some markets say 'Land Cruiser' for any large 4x4, and that default shows up directly in resale prices for an equally well-kept Armada.

Is it worth the discount

For a buyer who cares about the mechanicals and not the badge, that resale gap is an opportunity: an Armada in comparable condition and mileage to a Patrol typically asks less, for essentially the same ownership experience and the same parts network. The trade-off arrives when you come to sell — expect a longer time on the market and a firmer negotiation from buyers who know exactly why it is priced below the equivalent Patrol.

Because both nameplates share a drivetrain family with a long Gulf service history, reliability concerns are the same as any high-mileage V8 Nissan: check timing chain guides and cooling system history on anything past 150,000 km, and budget for the same maintenance a Patrol owner would.
