Renault Dokker VAN review: a discontinued workhorse still earning its keep in Bahrain
MotorsSouq Editorial Team
Buy a used Dokker VAN for exactly one reason: cheap, boxy cargo capacity for a trade or small delivery business that does not need a full-size van's payload. It rides roughly unladen, the cabin is bare, and Renault no longer builds it, but a well-maintained example is inexpensive to run and easy for an independent workshop to service, and that is the entire job description.
Pros
- 3,300-litre cargo hold on a car-based platform costs less to buy and run than a light truck
- Mechanicals shared with other B0-platform Renaults, so independent workshops know it
- Low running costs for delivery and trade use
- Simple, durable engine and gearbox when serviced on schedule
Cons
- Discontinued worldwide, so no factory warranty backstop remains
- Bare cabin with minimal comfort or refinement
- Ride firms up considerably once loaded
- Resale pool is small and depends heavily on trade buyers
Nobody bought a Dokker VAN for the driving experience, and that remains true of the used ones circulating Bahrain's trade and delivery businesses today. The 1.6-litre engine and five-speed manual are unremarkable, the ride firms up considerably once the 3,300-litre cargo hold is loaded, and the cabin is built to be wiped down rather than admired.
What it is actually good at
The point of the Dokker was always the load bay relative to the price: a genuinely large, flat-floored cargo area on a car-based platform that costs less to buy, insure and fuel than a proper light truck. For a small trade business doing island-wide deliveries rather than construction-site hauling, that trade-off still makes sense on a used example.
Buying one now
Renault has discontinued the Dokker worldwide, so every unit in Bahrain is a used or fleet-disposal vehicle. That is not a reason to avoid it — the mechanicals are shared with other B0-platform Renaults that independent workshops already know — but it does mean checking service history matters more than usual, since there is no factory warranty backstop left.
