Toyota Innova (Crysta) review: Bahrain's default big family MPV

3.8/5

motorssouq Editorial Team

Buy the Innova for what it is: a body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive eight-seater that every workshop in Bahrain can fix and every used-car buyer recognises. The 2.7-litre petrol is thirstier and less refined than a diesel would be, but it sidesteps the emissions paperwork and cold-start habits that put off private buyers, and resale among large families and small fleets stays dependable. Skip it if you want car-like handling — buy a Highlander or a Prado instead.

Pros

  • Body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive underpinnings shared with Hilux and Fortuner mean every Toyota workshop in Bahrain knows the car
  • Genuine eight-seat capacity with a third row adults can actually use
  • GCC-spec 2.7-litre petrol avoids diesel emissions paperwork and cold-start complaints
  • Strong resale among large families and small fleets keeps depreciation predictable

Cons

  • 2.7-litre petrol is thirstier and less refined than the diesel sold in other regions
  • Body-on-frame ride is firmer and less car-like than a unibody rival like the Highlander
  • Six-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive feel dated next to newer front-drive MPVs
  • Heavy fleet and taxi use means mileage alone tells you little — service history matters more

The Innova Crysta rides on Toyota's IMV body-on-frame platform, the same underlying architecture as the Hilux pickup and the Fortuner SUV sold across the Gulf. That shared DNA is the entire point: parts commonality, engine familiarity and a rear-wheel-drive layout built to survive being driven hard, loaded heavy and serviced by whoever is cheapest and closest, not necessarily the franchised dealer.

Space over speed

Inside, the Innova does one job better than almost anything else sold in Bahrain at the price: moving eight people with enough knee room in the third row that adults do not need to fold themselves in half. That is why it dominates school-run fleets, airport transfer companies and large multi-generational households rather than private single buyers.

The GCC-spec 2.7-litre petrol four is adequate rather than eager — 164 hp has to move close to two tonnes once the car is loaded — and the six-speed automatic is tuned for smoothness over response. Fuel consumption is the honest trade-off for skipping a diesel: expect noticeably higher running costs than a diesel-engined equivalent sold elsewhere in the world.

Ownership in Bahrain

Because the same platform underpins the Hilux and Fortuner, independent workshops across Bahrain stock or can source Innova parts without drama, and a service rarely turns into a waiting game for an imported component. Resale is similarly unbothered by depreciation anxiety: large families replacing one Innova tend to buy another.

The ride is where the body-on-frame layout shows its age — firmer over expansion joints and less settled at speed than a unibody rival like the Highlander. Judge a used example on its service stamps rather than its odometer; high-mileage taxi and fleet cars are common, and a consistent maintenance record matters more than the number on the dial.
