Our Genesis review

Hyundai Genesis (2014–2016) review: a forgotten flagship worth a second look in Bahrain

3.4/5

motorssouq Editorial Team

The last Hyundai-badged Genesis is a genuinely accomplished RWD luxury sedan for a fraction of what a comparable Lexus or 5 Series costs used in Bahrain, but the brand split left it an orphan: no Genesis showroom to fall back on locally, and independent workshops that know it far less well than they know a Sonata. Buy one only if you have already found a mechanic comfortable with the 3.8-litre Lambda V6 and the ZF-derived automatic, and only at a price that reflects the risk.

Pros

  • 3.8-litre V6 and 8-speed automatic deliver genuine RWD luxury-sedan performance
  • Cabin space and ride quality rival a Lexus GS at a fraction of the used price
  • Long, comfortable highway cruiser for causeway runs to Saudi
  • Shares core mechanicals with other Hyundai/Kia Lambda-engine models

Cons

  • No meaningful Genesis-brand service network in Bahrain to fall back on
  • Independent workshops know it far less well than mainstream Hyundais
  • Parts for the automatic transmission and higher trims can require special order
  • Resale value has fallen faster than a comparable Sonata or Azera

Before Hyundai spun its luxury ambitions into the standalone Genesis brand in 2015–2016, the Genesis sedan sold in Bahrain simply wearing the Hyundai badge. It was, on paper, an unlikely proposition: a rear-wheel-drive, V6-powered executive sedan from a company still best known locally for the Accent and Elantra. On the road it was — and still is — a genuinely convincing one.

The 3.8-litre GDI V6 sends a confident 311 hp through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels, and the chassis was tuned with a clear brief: match the ride quality of a Lexus GS at half the price. It largely succeeds. The cabin is quiet on the highway, the seats are wide and long-legged, and the boot swallows luggage for a family trip across the causeway without complaint.

The catch is the badge, not the car

The problem in Bahrain today is not the driving experience, it is everything around it. Genesis became a separate luxury brand shortly after this car launched, and its retail presence in Bahrain has never matched Hyundai's. That means no factory-trained Genesis technicians on every corner, and parts that sometimes have to be sourced rather than pulled off a shelf — a real inconvenience for a car whose electronics and trim options are more complex than an Elantra's.

Independent workshops that service Hyundais daily can usually handle routine maintenance, but anything involving the 8-speed automatic or the more elaborate trim levels benefits from a specialist who has actually worked on one. Ask before you buy where that specialist is.

Who it actually suits

This is a car for a buyer who wants genuine rear-wheel-drive luxury-sedan presence and space at a price that a used 5 Series or E-Class simply cannot touch, and who is willing to do the homework on where to service it. Treated that way, it is one of the best-value used luxury cars in Bahrain. Treated like an ordinary Hyundai, it will disappoint.
